WA fishos wage war on exclusion zones
A newly-formed fishing lobby group in Western
Australia has vowed to hold the State Government accountable for what
it says is a non-consultative approach to the revision of marine parks
and fishing exclusion zones.
The Recreational Fishing Alliance (RFA) will use a $100,000 fund to fight
further restrictions to recreational anglers in coastal and offshore
waters including no-take zones in key recreational fishing spots.
RFA says recreational fishers support well-planned multiple-use marine
parks, but strongly object to the establishment of no-fishing areas without
public consultation. The group is fighting the proposed State Government
plan to restrict fishing in popular recreational spots such as Kalbarri,
Abrolhos Islands, Albany and Bremer Bay.
"
If these exclusion zones are implemented the repercussions for West Australian
fishers and their lifestyles would be immense," said RFA president
Ben Patrick. "There will be a massive reduction in the places where
they can enjoy fishing with family and friends."
As BlueWater went to press, RFA was conducting a media and direct mail
campaign in marginal Government seats in an effort to encourage voters
to show their displeasure with the Government's policies in the
state election, held on February 26.
Environment Minister Judy Edwards has said the Government was aware of
the need for improved consultation with all interested parties relating
to marine park planning and policy. A revised marine park policy is reportedly
due in coming months for Ningaloo, Rowley Shoals, Durien Bay and the
Montebellos.
